3. Gas Power Cycles, Internal Combustion Engines

Homework Assignment

#1. An engine modeled using the cold air-standard Otto cycle has a compression ratio of 9.   At the end of the power stroke (state 4) the air in the cylinder is at 1000 oR and 95 psi.  During the constant volume cooling process, 86 Btu/lb is removed by heat transfer.  Determine

  1. the temperature and pressure at each state (1,2,&3) in the cycle
  2. the net work in Btu/lb
  3. the heat addition in Btu/lb
  4. the thermal efficiency
  5. the mean effective pressure in psi

#2. Repeat problem #1 on an air-standard basis and compare the results to those obtained in problem #1.

#3.  Air at 300oK and 101 kPa (state 1) is compressed in an engine modeled using the cold air-standard Otto cycle. The engine has a compression ratio of 10 and a pressure ratio of 3.0. Determine:

  1. the temperature and pressure at each state (2,3&4) in the cycle
  2. the net work in Btu/lb
  3. the heat addition in Btu/lb
  4. the thermal efficiency
  5. the mean effective pressure in psi

#4. Repeat problem #3 (cold air-standard) using a pressure ratio of 4.0 and compare the results to those obtained in problem #3.
